and retrofits were needed to make this veteran’s home a safe and accessible one. U.S. VRC’s Lafayette DET, 1VA BN, assisted members of two Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Posts to remodel the home of a disabled veteran. Our veterans, generous with their time and talents, provided their support to widen four doorways, modify cabinets, gut and renovate a bathroom, house-clean, move boxes, and create an open space – including raising a ceiling – to make way for a chair life from garage to kitchen. The team, comprised of a dozen each of military veterans and civilian contractors, used a key risk mitigation practice of assigning a dedicated Safety Observer and maintainer of COVID-19 workplace sanitation standards. U.S. VRC members reported a busy and fulfilling day answering the call from the friends of a quadriplegic veteran. Good mission planning and execution were key. A disabled veteran was able to return to his home thanks to the skills and helping hands of his battle buddies.
U.S. VRC made-up part of a 24 member crew which transformed an unlivable home into a welcoming
and functional one for a quadriplegic veteran. In addition, the project generated camaraderie, boosted
morale and gave the team the satisfaction of making a difference for this veteran.
